Should Reserve/Youth Teams use First Team tactics

$
0
0
For years now I've been playing FM on the assumption that reserve teams should use the first teams tactics to prepare the younger players to play using those tactics and roles. That would obviously be appropriate to real life. But does FM actually work like that? Would I be better off using a tactic to maximise the game time of my reserves and youth teams?

For example, my first team uses an AM(C) however my reserve and youth teams don't have any good prospects who play that position, whilst i have a wealth of S(C) and only one space. Should I use 4-4-2, a tactic I would never use in the first team, to give game time to another striker in his proper position?

Intro

My name is Chris Ball. I'm 31 from Kent in England. Having played Football Manager for as long as I can remember now, going back a number of years and so a number of different games, I have to admit that things have become a little stale for me over the past couple of months. I've struggled with motivation, starting multiple games over and over, never getting past a couple of months before I am inevitably bored.

So I wondered what I could do to inspire myself and keep myself interested and motivated. Now I'm a guy that likes praise - like most of us I enjoy being told when I'm doing anything good. So I thought I'd write a story for the first time. I started a new save as Nottingham Forest and cracked on. Now the story side of the game I really enjoyed and this interested me, but by October on my game I was bored AGAIN!!

Feeling frustrated and requiring some inspiration, I went back through the FM Base archives and read a number of other people's stories and I think I've found what I was looking for. I need to do something I've never done before, start a game I've never played before...

In all my time playing the Football Manager series, I've probably spent 90% of my time managing in England. I've dabbled in the likes of Serie A, Ligue 1 and La Liga but have always focussed on England. And I think this where I'm going wrong....there's a whole world of Football Management out there for me to tackle and I've left it totally unexplored.

So to spark my love for this wonderful game again, I'm going to give something a go that I've never done. A proper career....starting as an unknown coach with no real qualifications or experience....and starting unemployed for the first time ever! And this is going to be a career....I want to rise through the ranks and make my name in the world of football management from scratch....and I have to say that for the first time in a long time I am kicking off a new game of Footy Man with some genuine excitement.

So where will this story begin....

As mentioned above, I am starting my game unemployed and with no coaching badges and experience as only a sunday league footballer. So I know opportunities are going to be few and far between to get myself a job! Therefore, there's no point loading any of the major leagues to start with as I know nobody in their right mind will touch me....

No, I need to go to the lower leagues of the lesser countries in Europe. Oh Europe, yes I've decided to stick with Europe only and this will be a story of my rise through the European ranks and countries, with a view to increase the reputation and stature of every club I am lucky enough to manage. Europe is the focus as I know the countries and major competitions pretty well.

So the leagues I'm starting off with are...

Austrian First Division and above
Croatian Second League and above
Danish Second Division and above
Finnish First Division and above
Hungarian Division II and above
Icelandic First Division and above
Israeli National League and above
Norwegian Second Division and above
Swedish Second Division and above

Let's see where I end up!

A World Cup Call Up Rant/Story

Not at all worth its own thread but the rant thread is still locked, and I feel like sharing.

Before FM17, I had never tried a save in South America. I've toyed with the idea of managing in Brazil or Argentina but just never have. Reading some manager stories, I decided to give it a try and ended up at Envigado in Colombia. They are an interesting club in real life, as they are entirely focused on developing young players - they have produced the likes of James Rodriguez, Fredy Guarin, and Jhon Cordoba. So they have a really good youth set up. Not much money and not much history of success, but for a save of building around youth, its great. My first save with them went two years before it was sunk by a transfer bug. It was one of my favorite FM17 saves, though, so I thought I give it another try.

Now the league is 20 clubs, with a split season - Apertura and Closura. Each has the teams play each other once (20 matches total) and the top 8 on the table go into a playoff. The playoffs are two legs each round, so it can be six matches. Add in the Colombia cup which has a group stage and the possibility of continental competition, and it can end up being a lot of football if you are doing well. The players vacation between seasons at the end of 2017 was 5 days lol.

A bit of an aside, but I tend to use the Add Players to Active Teams options when setting up a new save, meaning you often get first day newgens. Envigado doesn't have a full youth squad to start, so they do. And they almost always get good ones. In my first Envigado save, I had 4 16 year old players with PA of 166 and above, then two more in the first youth intake in January. This time, I had a high PA 16 year old MC who is one of the more rounded newgens I've ever had. Good personality, good key attributes, decent size, decent physicals. He is now 19, has started 100 matches for the club, and his CA has gone from 90 to 145. He's got the Wonderkid label and plenty of interest abroad. Know I'll be losing him, but the offers haven't been high enough and while he's been unhappy and wanting to leave for the better part of a year, but trying to hold out for a real solid offer. Ironically, his unhappiness is over wanting to leave for a bigger club, set off by a rejected offer by a notably smaller club in a bigger league. Colombia produces plenty of talented youngsters, and I did manage to poach a few others. Combined with the good youngsters already in the squad and good youth intakes, the squad is loaded with potential but its already playing well.

Approaching the summer of 2018, I never thought to worry about the World Cup. Didn't have any current full internationals. Quite a number of players are youth internationals, and they called up where there isn't necessarily a break, which has been problematic a few times. But when I got a message than 8 players had been called up for the World Cup.... PANIC. The world Cup calls ups started in early June. The playoffs start in early June. Yup, timed out exactly how I didn't want it to. Thrilled that 8 players went from youth to full internationals but not the timing. First match of the Quarter Final was the day after the 8 players left. 8 players who are all first choice in a shallow squad. And to make it just that tiny bit more fun, my only starting caliber fullback still in the squad is suspended for the first playoff match. I can't even adjust my formation to try to accommodate - the call ups are a GK, 2 fullbacks, 2 central defenders, and 3 midfielders.

The earliest the 8 players could be back would be June 18, which means they miss 4 matches of the playoffs.... if we make it that far.

I'm more amused by the situation than anything. I thought the save was dead a year into it as I ran into a transfer bug (different one than what killed the first save). So I'm just happy I can continue on at all. And if the kids I won with before aren't available, I'll just have to see if the even younger kids can do it.

With Harry Kane scoring his 100th Spurs goal and Wayne Rooney recently becoming only the second player to reach 200 goals in the Premier League, I thought it would be fun to see how close I could get to breaking Alan Shearer's long held record of 260 goals.

Feel free to join in and post your progress (someone may have already done it!).

As a Man Utd fan I've started up a new save and am going to attack this from two fronts - Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial who currently have 12 and 17 goals respectively, waaaaay down the list.

So let's get cracking...

I was inspired too much by the TFF when doing this tactic. I can even admit that I made only a few minor changes. But it was stronger than I thought. Match training offensive organizations must be used. No OI.

Also during this test I only went on a holiday during a season. I did not do anything. I had to make this decision hastily to present your use. I keep using tactics in my own long-running career. You will find an incredible percentage of playing the ball.

Is ss the wrong role?

Hi All,

I have a strikerless counter formation where I use a left sided inside forward, a central ss and a right sidied winger.

The issue I seem to have is my ss tries to take on everything infront of him instead of laying it off or lloking for support.

Should I change the role?

Draft World Cup

$

Hi there,

I'm doing a World Cup using FM's draft mode - where each nation can only pick players based in its leagues (so for example Gareth Bale would be eligible for Spain rather than Wales). So far, I have done the qualifiers - from this upcoming weekend I'll be starting the tournament proper.

Here's the link for the first episode - at the end of each one should be a link to the next: Introduction - Hypo FM

Personally I've found it really exciting to play, so I'm hoping to have as many readers for when the finals begin. I'm also hoping to be able to use FM18 to do the same tournament over the next year, to tie in with the real World Cup.

Let me know what you think!

Edit: I should also add, each Qualification Group (there's 12 in total) has a vote at the end with the best three goals, which you can see in GIF form. Also the latest post (Finals draw & preview) has a chance for you to vote on who you think will get through each group.

A CS Balote?ti (romanian second division) challenge

Hello,

After years and years of playing, I found some day off from the university and I decided to post here my new career.

I chose CS Balotesti, from the Romanian Second League, because I am from Romania and it is the weakiest team from here. The main objective of this save will be to run near the Champions League Group Stage and, for doing that, I will need to win the Romanian First League, because from Romania only the champion goes to CL.

Hi All,

There has been a fatal blow to my abilty to play FM, the laptop has broken :'(.

I only ask you asisst me in a hope to get me through this time of great misfortune and sorrow.

I was planning on starting an AC save in a bid to bring them back as giants of europe.

I have a formation in mind and a I have a sort of philosophy "Bigger is Better", meaning I want tall players with strength. Where do I want them? EVERYWHERE!

So formation (forgive the format)

I am aware I will have to operate within a budget, I am unaware what that budget is (Ha Ha, oh my precious laptop).
I am also unaware of what could generated through players sales (Ha Ha , why did you leave).
Finally I am unaware of player stats and pref moves (AHHHHHH, you F$%^&*g left me!!!)

I would just like ideas of who to sign for what position I think the defence is pretty sound, I know the CM's dont fit my image and Bacca, Adrian Luiz, Lapadula (I think thats right) fit the mould. But improvements are always welcome.

Please help me.

Inside Forwards & Two-Footedness

I've been watching a few of my games in 'extended' playback recently to see if there are any tactical tweaks I could make. I've noticed that my inside forwards do still end up using their weaker foot surprisingly often. I'd say about 30% of their final balls (either passes, little crosses or shots when forced wide by the defenders) are made with their weaker foot.

With that in mind, would training two-footedness potentially be worth it for them?

I've just picked up a wonderkid regen with world-class potential & I'm thinking of getting him to spend a bit of his CA on becoming relatively two-footed. Is that a good idea?

In November of last year, I introduced my best friend Miro to Football Manager 2016 and he was instantly hooked. In February, we decided to start playing network games vs each other in which we play for 2-3 hoursevery night. This turned into 5-6 hours as well during the day whilst at Uni!!
We are very competitive and often argue for hours either on Facebook or at work about who is the better managers, who has done the best, won the most trophies etc.
This is a points system that is used to decide who is the best. It is updated in July of every season.

Below is summary of the teams we have been so far and then the story will continue to be updated from where we are now going forwards.

Game 1 – Real Madrid (Nick) Barcelona (Miro)
We played one season in Spain with Miro’s Barcelona winning the League and Copy Del Rey defeating me once in the league 5-1 and 3-0 in the cup final. The other league match was a 1-1 draw.
I won the Champions League defeating Juventus in the final, Miro succumbed to them in Quarter Finals.

Game 2 – Robbie Brady FC (Nick) International FC (Miro)
We decided to create two teams and put them in the English Championship – we could pick a maximum of 2 players from each Championship team to make up our first squad of 25 players.
This save was played for 6 seasons with Nick winning a few leagues and champions league titles. In the latter 2 seasons Miro left International and joined Man United where he also had some success.

Game 3 – Edinburgh City (Nick) Albion Rovers (Miro)
We continued from the previous save but with new managers and different teams this time starting in the Scottish League Two. Miro managed back to back promotions with Albion Rovers whilst I was sacked in the first season and joined Stranraer in the league above. I did also manager to win the play offs in the 2nd season.

Game 4 – Tottenham (Nick) Man United (Miro)
A new game in the English Premier League, Tottenham won the league the first two seasons with Man United only picking up a Europa League. The following two seasons Man United dominated by winning the league and Champions League consecutively. Tottenham regained the Premier League in the 5thseason but Man United defeated them in the Champions League final to win it 3years in a row. In the final season Tottenham won everything capping it offwith a famous 11-2 victory vs Man United in the Champions League Final.

Game 5 – Schalke (Nick) Leverkusen (Miro) CURRENT
